Melatonin Sleep

Melatonin can affect the level of sugar in the blood. If you have diabetes, check with your healthcare provider before taking the supplement. You may need to monitor your blood sugar more often, and your healthcare provider may need to adjust the dose of your diabetes medications.

There have been reports that melatonin may worsen depression symptoms. If you have depression, check with your healthcare provider before taking the supplement.
The liver helps to remove melatonin from your body. Therefore, if you have liver disease, your body may not handle the supplement as well as normal.
Melatonin may worsen seizure disorders. However, there is some evidence that it may be helpful for seizures in some situations. If you have a seizure disorder, do not take melatonin without your healthcare provider’s approval.
Melatonin supplements can interact with some medications (see Melatonin Drug Interactions).
It is not known if melatonin is safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women (see Melatonin and Pregnancy and Melatonin and Breastfeeding).
If you decide to use supplements, what you see on the label may not reflect what is in the bottle. For example, some herbal supplements have been found to be contaminated with heavy metals or prescription drugs, and some have been found to contain much more or much less of the featured ingredient than the label states. Therefore, make sure the manufacturer of your melatonin product is trusted and reputable. It is a good sign if a manufacturer abides by the rules of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). It is also a good sign if a product has the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) seal, which means that it has been independently tested and shown to contain the correct ingredients in the amounts listed on the label. Your pharmacist is a good resource for information about which manufacturers are most reputable

Melatonin sleep is slightly different than falling asleep under normal and natural circumstances because you generally sleep very deeply and and have vivid dreams and nightmares.  Melatonin is a hormone that occurs naturally and is used a supplement to treat insomnia and other common sleep disorders.  It is also used for many other things, such as jet lag and the occasional ‘I can’t get to sleep’ problem.   that is popular in supplements, especially for treating sleep disorders (such as insomnia).

While sleep and jet lag are the main reasons melatonin is used, it also has other ancillary benefits, such as preventing migrane and painful headaches, as a supplement to fight cancer and the onset of cancer and treating alzheimers disease.

Melatonin has proven to be very effective in ‘lulling’ your body to sleep.  Melatonin production in your body increases as it gets closer to your bed time, slowly easing your body into sleep rather than ‘knocking you out’.  The issues with this, however, is that many people have mastered fighting off the feeling and have become immune to the melatonin that their body produces naturally.  Supplementing your natural melatonin production with synthetically produced melatonin can help ease you back into great natural ‘melatonin sleep’.

Melatonin is closely related to another hormone called serotonin, which is a brain chemical that is closely related with the balance, regulation, and treatment of depression.  It has been speculated, and currently being researched, that melatonin could have an impact and possibly be a remedy for depresion.  This, however, is pure speculation at this point so don’t take melatonin and think you might be treating your depression.  At best it will just make you tire, and at worst it could have serious implications on your health.

Things to be aware of if you are going to take melatonin:

  • Those with diabetes should absolutely consult with their physician or doctor before taking melatonin.  Melatonin can affect your blood sugar levels and so it is important to talk with your doctor first about how you plan to use melatonin and the melatonin dosage levels.
  • We talked about how some people are experimenting with melatonin for treating depression.  While some think it may help, many others believe it may actually make things much worse.  Like we’ve cautioned before, do not use melatonin if you suffer from depression.
  • If you have liver issues, such as liver disease, you should consult with your personal doctor.  The liver’s function is to filter the blood and by taking melatonin you are adding melatonin to your blood stream, which your liver will then slowly filter out of your blood.  If you have liver problems this may cause complications.
  • If you have seizures, melatonin may make things worse.  Do not take melatonin if you have seizures.
  • If you take other drugs, OTC medicines, or prescriptions, you should talk to your doctor to ensure you won’t have any complications from the combinations of chemicals you’ll be introducing to your body.
  • Research has not yet difinitely determined if breastfeeding is a safe activity for women whom are consuming melatonin.
